Risperdal Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a serious side effect of Risperdal / Risperdone is the increased and unwanted growth and enlargement of breast tissue in young teenaged males. Risperdal and anti-psychotic medication approved for use by adolesants in 2007. Hundreds of Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit are currently on file across the United States.

Gynecomastia is swelling or enlargement of the breast tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone and the over production of a hormone called prolactin. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts. Newborns, boys going through puberty and older men may develop gynecomastia as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, though other causes also exist including side effects to certain antipsychotic medications such as Risperdal.

Gynecomastia isn't a serious life threatening problem, but it can be very embarrassing for a young boy or teenaged male to cope with. Gynecomastia also can cause pain in their breasts.  Early signs and symptoms of gynecomastia may include swollen breast gland tissue and unusual breast and nipple pain, lactation and tenderness. Medical experts suggest that young men could see their Doctor is they experience such breast swelling, pain & tenderness and if one observes a discharge from the nipples in one or both breasts.

Negligence and Lack of Risperdal Warnings by J & J

Since 2006 Johnson & Johnson has been aware of the serious Risperdal side effect of Gynecomastia. In fact in a medical study conducted by Duke University, medical researchers found that the risk of Risperdal / Risperdone and male breast enlargement and breast development was much stronger than compared to other antipsychotics and in the same study it was revealed that some pre-puberty girls were even lactating. Johnson and Johnson armed with this knowledge and similar evidence from their own medical studies (see below) was negligent in not warning Doctors and Patients of this greatly increased risk of gynecomastia. This of course comes on the eve of 2007 introduction of Risperdal and FDA approval for the use in children and teens.

Risperdal Gynecomastia - Breast Development / Enlargement in Young Males

In a Risperdal report and study conducted by Johnson & Johnson (J & J) Risperdal / Risperdone was found to increase prolactin levels in:
    • 49% of young boys and teen males suffering from autism and certain other ailments.
    • 82% to  87% of young males with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder

NOTE: In the same study by Johnson and Johnson, it was found that only about 7% of the males in the study that took a placebo had increased prolactin levels.
