Risperdal Side Effects
FDA Risperdal Recall

In June of 2011 the FDA announced Risperdal's manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson was issuing a Risperdal recall for Risperdal 3mg tablets and Risperdone recall for risperidone 2mg tablets, after consumers report an uncharacteristic odor associated with the pills. The suspicious odor that prompted the Risperdal (Risperidone) recall is thought to be caused by trace amounts of TBA (2,4,6 tribromoanisole), a byproduct of a chemical preservative used on wood pallets use to transport and store the Risperdal and Risperdone. Prior to the Risperdal (Risperidone) recall, a small number of patients had reported temporary gastrointestinal symptoms.

Risperdal Recall Update

To date the FDA has not forced a J & J to issue a natiowide Risperdal recall due to the increased risks and dangers associated with gynecomastia and the younger male Risperdal patients. Even though as early as 2006 Johnson and Johnson knew of the increased risks of young males been diagnosed with gynecomastia as a result of Risperdal and Risperdone use.  In fact in a 2006 Risperdal medical study conducted by Duke University, medical researchers found that the risk of Risperdal / Risperdone and male breast enlargement and breast development was much stronger than compared to other similar antipsychotics and in the same study it was revealed that some pre-puberty girls were even lactating.

Even with this knowledge and similar evidence from their own medical studies, J & J was negligent in not warning Doctors and Patients of this greatly increased risk of gynecomastia. This of Risperdal study by Duke University researchers comes the year before the introduction of Risperdal and FDA approval for the use in children and teens in 2007.
